My Location guide to all my favorite locations to shoot near Cortez Co

 Sand Canyon/ Canyon of the Ancients

This location has beautiful red rocks, sand, and cactus

Parking:

Free parking at the location

Best time of day to take photos:

  • 1-3 pm if you want a hot desert look with bright highlights and harsh shadows

  • Golden hour (an hour before sunset) if you want a soft warm sunny look

 Hawkins Preserve

This location has a beautiful view of the mountains with beautiful rocks and trees. It is great for family photos and senior photos

  Boggy Draw

This location has pine trees and it is great if you want a forest look without driving far.

   Dolores River

This location is best in the summer but still beautiful in winter

    Rico Co

This location is about 15 minutes past Rico Colorado. It has an amazing mountain view. In the winter the snow blocks off the trail so we can not walk far without snowshoes so we are limited to shooting right by the road. (Will require an additional travel fee)

Best time of day to take photos:

afternoon, we will lose sunlight earlier because the sun gets blocked by the mountains. I’ve found the best time to shoot there is around 3-4 pm

    Groundhog Reservoir

This location has a great mountain view and beautiful pine trees! (Will require an additional $50 travel fee)
